Items either patch a weakness or amplify a strength

Since IVs are fixed in Champions, the difference between two copies of the same Pokémon comes down entirely to items, moveset, and play. That makes item choice matter even more than in the mainline games. There are two basic axes to choose from — patch a weakness (low bulk, losing speed ties, a 4x weakness) or amplify a strength (raw power, recovery).

When you're not sure, ask these questions

  1. Does this Pokémon want to tank a hit, or move first? → To tank, go Sash/Sitrus. To move first, go Scarf.
  2. Does the item actually change the hit count? → A power item is only worth it if it turns a 2HKO into a 1HKO. If it doesn't, lean defensive instead. The damage calculator lets you factor items directly into the math.
  3. Does this overlap with another item on your team? → Two Focus Sashes cover less ground than one Sash plus one Scarf.
