Thinking in Damage Races — Who Wins the Trade?
How to combine KO counts and Speed to judge who actually comes out ahead if a matchup turns into a straight slugging match. (updated: 2026-07-24)
KO count alone doesn't decide it
Once you're comfortable with reading KO counts, the next step is thinking in terms of a damage race: “if this turns into a straight slugging match, who actually wins?” Even with the same KO count on both sides, whoever gets to act first has the real advantage.
Combining KO count with Speed
- You KO in 2 hits and move first, they also KO in 2: you land both hits first, so you're effectively ahead.
- You KO in 2, they KO in 3, but they're faster: the question is whether you can land your 2 hits before they land their 3rd. Write out the turn order if it's not obvious.
- If something could flip who's faster (a Choice Scarf, a stat-boosting move), factor that possibility in too.
When healing or shields are involved
An opponent with Leftovers or a recovery move can't always be out-raced by KO count math alone. Weigh how much their per-turn healing eats into your own damage output. Running a few turns forward on the damage calculator makes real-match decisions much faster.
When priority moves are involved
An opponent with a priority move can still land the finishing blow even if you're faster overall. This matters most in the endgame, once both sides are down to their last hit — always double-check whether priority is in play before you commit.
A simple checklist for real matches
When in doubt, run through these four in order: 1) your own KO count, 2) theirs, 3) the Speed matchup, 4) whether priority or recovery changes the math. This is exactly the logic behind the reasoning shown on every counter page.
