When to Mega Evolve — Picking Your Slot and Timing It Right

Mega Evolution is your one trump card per game
Mega Evolution is powerful precisely because only one Pokémon on your team can actually use it (only one can hold a Mega Stone at a time). That means two decisions carry enormous weight: who gets the slot and when you actually Mega Evolve.
Choosing who gets the Mega slot
When you have multiple candidates, weigh these factors:
- Does the role change dramatically? Some Mega Evolutions gain an entirely new type, which rewrites their weaknesses and coverage from scratch. If that shift patches a hole in your team, the value is high.
- How much do Speed and power actually improve? Check whether Mega Evolving crosses a key speed threshold or changes a hit count, using the damage calculator and speed tier list.
- Can it anchor your team? Your Mega slot tends to get selected often, so it should stay useful against a wide range of opponents rather than being a narrow tech pick.
Deciding when to Mega Evolve
You can Mega Evolve once per battle, at any point you choose. Evolving the instant it's sent out is usually fine, but a few situations call for more thought:
- Watch for Speed changes: your Speed updates to the post-Mega value starting the very turn you evolve. If a Pokémon is slow before Mega Evolving and fast after, don't misjudge the turn order on the first turn.
- Reading the opponent's switch: if you're about to be put in a bad matchup, it can be correct to switch out instead of Mega Evolving. Since it's a one-time resource, don't waste it either.
Building a team around your Mega slot
Since Mega Evolution tends to anchor your selection, it's often more stable to build your team around that Pokémon first. Check its counter page for what gives it trouble, and place a cushion in your lineup that can handle those threats — that's the standard formula. When it comes to actual team selection, think carefully about whether the matchup lets you safely bring your Mega Evolution to the table.
